Britta Byström

Britta Byström has composed chamber music, vocal music and opera, but the emphasis has been on orchestral music. Some of those who have performed her music are the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra and the Swedish Radio Orchestra. Her viola concerto A Walk After Dark received the da capo-prize at the Brandenburger Biennale 2014. In 2016, she was named winner of Elaine Lebenbom Award For Female Composers by Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Segelnde Stadt - for orchestra (2014)

”Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see”, Paul Klee said. Segelnde Stadt is a piece inspired by a Klee painting. The painting can bee seen both as a paper kite and as a distant, sailing city. I have tried to capture this double perspective  in the music which was commissioned by the town Umeå (as the European Capital of Culture 2014).
